♡ 43 ( +1 | -1 ) Question on openingsI have a file called eco.dat, that comes with one of the chess programs and contains a big number of openings. Each line looks like in this example: e2e4 b7b6, B00, Owen defence Everything is clear, except one thing. What does B00 mean? In general this is a letter from A to E followed by a number. Can someone explain this, please? Also, does the abbreviation "eco" mean smth?

♡ 31 ( +1 | -1 ) ECO......stands for Encyclopedia of Chess Openings,a 5 vol.set published and revised by the Yugoslav company that publishes the Infirmants. Vol.B,if I remember right, dealt with all Black responses to 1.e4 other than 1...e5 and the French. The codes go from B00 to B99,with the rarer, offbeat stuff like 1...b6 being covered first, hence B00.

♡ 40 ( +1 | -1 ) InformantsThe original name is actually informator, but it was translated into informant. Yugoslav chess used to be quite strong before that country was tore apart. A site called Belgrade blitz still exists, but the site called Belgrade Gambit and other knightmares disappred lately, just like Kasparovchess. But unlike the latter I don't know for what reasons.
