90 ( +1 | -1 ) Fischer Random ChessWhat do you guys think about having the possibility playing FRC here on GK - like deciding whether to play a normal game of chess or a game FRC.
For those among you who do not exactly know the story of FRC - here is a link: www.chessvariants.com/diffsetup.dir/fischerh.html
I myself played it a lot since I first heard of it - and I enjoy it very, very much. No more opening theory... which means no use of databases would be possible... I guess some of you might feel happy about that :-)
So what is your opinion about that chess variant - and about the possibility to play it at GK - maybe we could ask Mike or Alex to implement that variant - it's definitely worth the effort.
103 ( +1 | -1 ) I think that, in general, Fischer random chess is quite a good idea, and it's worth trying on this site. But before that, two issues need to be addressed:
1. Ratings. Will there be special ratings for Fischer chess, or will Fischer games affect the "regular" GK rating ? I personally don't mind either way, but a lot of players will object to the 2nd way, claiming that Fischer random is not "really chess", and Mike might object to the 1st way, which will require of him to maintain an extra set of ratings per player. Alternatively, Fischer games could just be made unrated.
2. Deleting games. Some players like (or dislike) particular configurations. Since here on GK there is a possibility to delete a game after 1-2 moves at no penalty, I see a potential point of abuse here. Of course, making all Fischer games unrated will solve this problem TOO - people will have no reason for such behavior in an unrated game.
So, yes, I am all for trying this - but at first only unrated...
60 ( +1 | -1 ) zdrakI didn't think about these two issues...
1.Ratings. I don't think that an extra Fischer rating is needed - everyone is free to decide playing "normal" chess or FRC.
2.Deleting games. That might become a problem - but what about an additional statistic "# of deleted games" at the players profile... then you might avoid playing people with a high "# of deleted games".
I hope that some more people here on GK back up FRC - it's getting more and more popular - and it is a lot of fun!!
29 ( +1 | -1 ) i second thatI would very much like to be able to play FRC on gameknot, with a separate rating system. I have played a few games, and it seems to retain most of the beauty of regular chess while avoiding the tendency to play through well established opening lines.
59 ( +1 | -1 ) I for one would love it!!!Let's do it...It's the most popular chess-variant that will maybe even become mainstream someday...Fischer invented it because he was tired of how much chess had become a memory game....some grandmasters have worked out some of their opening theory well into the endgame...they don't even have to think much for the first 10-20 moves...
I would love to see random chess even surpass regular chess someday in popularity..no more 'book' moves, Just think about your moves at the board...errr...or the keyboard!
